How to Choose the Best Photo for Your Pet Portrait

The most common question we hear before someone orders a portrait is simple: is my photo good enough? The good news is that you do not need a professional camera or a perfectly posed pet. A phone and a few simple tips are all it takes.

Here is how to choose, or take, the right photo for a portrait you will love.

1. Look for natural light

Soft daylight is your best friend. Photos taken near a window or outdoors on a bright, overcast day show the true colours of your pet's coat and eyes. Avoid harsh flash, which flattens features and can create red eyes.

2. Get down to their level

Photos taken from above make pets look small and distorted. Crouch down so the camera is at your pet's eye level. The portrait will feel more natural and more like them.

3. Make sure the face is sharp

The eyes are the heart of every portrait. Choose a photo where the face is in focus and clearly visible, even if the background is blurred.

4. Show their personality

The best portraits capture something of who your pet is. A tilted head, a curious look, a relaxed expression on their favourite spot. Choose the photo that makes you think: that is exactly them.

5. Do not worry about the background

A messy kitchen or a busy garden is not a problem. We remove the background and replace it with the style and colour you choose for your portrait.

What if I only have an older photo?

Many of our customers order portraits of pets who have passed, using photos taken years ago. Send us what you have. We will look at it carefully and tell you honestly what is possible.

Ready to turn your favourite photo into art?

Once you have your photo, the rest is simple. Choose your style and background, upload your image, and we will send you a digital preview to approve before your portrait is finished.
